Breaking Barriers 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run for the Lindsey House

Join us to support and celebrate the women and children of the Lindsey House as they complete a Couch to 5K running/walking program. This program is designed to demonstrate the physical, mental, social health benefits of breaking barriers to conventional training programs.

The Breaking Barriers 5k includes:

  • 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run
  • Awards for the top 3 overall male and female winners!
  • Standard 5 year age group awards.
  • Finishers medals for all 5K runners/walkers.
  • USATF measured and certified 5K course.
  • Beautiful tri-blend race shirts (limited numbers! Sign up early to make sure you get one.)

We want to share with everyone the incredible journey our Lindsey House families have taken. We will celebrate their achievement by running a 5K or a 1-Mile Fun Run.

Location

The start/finish line will be in the parking lot near the Osage Prairie Trail entrance - 700 N Greenwood Avenue. Ample parking is available on both sides of Greenwood Avenue.

The Osage Prairie Trail is an important aspect of the Lindsey House training program and the Breaking Barriers 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Why? Because the Lindsey House sits adjacent to the trail and our families have been training there since April 1st. We all get to run right next to where all the magic happens!

More information on the history of the Osage Prairie Trail and the connect to Skiatook is available on the Tulsa County Parks website.

Certified Course

The Breaking Barriers 5K course is a certified course along the Osage Prairie Trail (click here for the certification). The start line for both the 1-mile and 5K race is in the parking lot of OSU Tulsa. The course is an out-and-back course. The 5K turn-around at Virgin St.

Activate Oklahoma

Activate Oklahoma is a non-profit created to be able to partner with different entities to perpetuate health and fitness in the state of Oklahoma.

We believe that the social support groups and the built environment play a critical role in healthy lifestyles. We all understand the physical health benefits of exercise but this type of program also helps build mental health, creates self esteem, helps with self motivation and achieving goals not to mention the sense of community.

We are conducting a pilot program to evaluate the mental health aspects - specifically self-esteem by helping a group of residents at Lindsay House to complete a Couch to 5K program. We are striving to remove many of the barriers people face with fitness: shoes, clothing, transportation, and friendship/support.

Lindsey House

The Lindsey House is a transitional living space for women with children who are experiencing situational homelessness. In addition to providing families a fully-furnished apartment, women participate in a series of curriculum focused on financial literacy, workplace proficiency and life skills. The curriculum takes one year to complete and families are able to live at Lindsey House up to two years as they build on and implement the lessons they’ve learned through the curriculum.

Their unique approach in providing supportive services allows each family to maximize their goal achievement. Each program participant meets one-on-one with a Program Services Coordinator to set goals and create an Individualized Service Plan.
